The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron Youth Training Programme is entering a new phase as preparations begin for the 2026 intake, bringing both change and opportunity.
After three and a half years with RNZYS, Zak Merton has decided to step away from his role, with his final day being Monday 2 March. During his time with the programme, Zak made a strong contribution to the development of RNZYS sailors and the delivery of performance coaching. The results achieved on the world stage during this period reflect both Zak’s commitment and the hard work, talent, and dedication of the sailors and their families.
Zak will continue with business as usual over the coming weeks and remain actively involved in coaching, including supporting sailors at upcoming home and away regattas. RNZYS thanks Zak for his professionalism and care during this transition and wishes him all the best for the future.
A legacy to be proud of
Established in 1987, the RNZYS Youth Training Programme has been part of the heart of the Squadron for nearly four decades. Alumni of the programme have gone on to compete at the highest levels of the sport, including the Olympic Games, SailGP, the America’s Cup, and round-the-world offshore campaigns. Many have also remained closely connected to RNZYS and to sailing in New Zealand through coaching, volunteering, and leadership roles.
The programme’s strength lies in its balance of high-performance ambition and a strong club and community environment, supported by committed volunteers, families, and members. That balance remains central as the programme continues to evolve.
Looking Ahead
RNZYS will be bringing the Youth Training and Performance programmes together under the RNZYS Youth Training Programme banner. This approach is focused on providing clear and supportive pathways for sailors, from their first involvement through to advanced performance training, while continuing to strengthen participation, boat ownership, and the Squadron’s wider sailing community.
Supporting the Programme Through Change
To ensure continuity, the RNZYS Sailing Department will oversee the programme during this transition. Coaching delivery through the first half of the year will be supported by a roster of casual and contracted coaches, with a strong intention to involve past Youth Training Programme sailors and coaches alongside other experienced contributors. This reflects both the programme’s history and the depth of people willing to give back.
Recruitment for a permanent Performance Sailing Coach has now begun. RNZYS recognises that flexibility may be important to the right candidate, and the role can be shaped accordingly to best support sailors and the programme.
Members who may be interested, or who know someone well suited to the role, can view the full position details and apply via Seek.
Staying Connected
RNZYS thanks the sailors who shared feedback earlier this year, which will continue to inform the programme’s direction. A meeting with current Youth Training and Performance Programme sailors will be held to ensure their ideas and aspirations are reflected as the programme moves forward.
Applications for the 2026 Youth Training Programme intake are now open, with encouraging early interest already received. Parents, volunteers, and members are also welcome to share feedback or ideas at any time.
The Youth Training Programme has always been strengthened by the support of the RNZYS community. As the programme looks ahead, RNZYS welcomes conversations with members, alumni, and partners interested in supporting the programme through sponsorship, partnership, or other involvement.
Further updates will be shared as plans are confirmed.
