2024 Youth Match Racing World Championship held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Representing New Zealand with pride, the teams demonstrated exceptional skill and resilience in a highly competitive international field. This under 23 youth world title concluded on 2nd December with RNZYS Performance Programme’s Johs Hyde finishing in fourth place and RNZYS Mastercard Youth Training Programme’s Noah Malpot in 9th.
Reflecting on the event Josh Hyde said “It was an honour to represent New Zealand & the RNZYS at this event, we have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Jeddah and are looking forward to getting back to Auckland and start training for our regattas in the new year.”

RNZYS Head Coach Zak Merton reflected “Our sailors really embraced the opportunity to engage with the unique culture and history of Jeddah. From exploring the historic Al-Balad district to connecting with fellow sailors from around the world, the experience has really been a unique both on and off the water.”
The regatta will no doubt serve as a significant milestone in the development of our youth sailors reinforcing their commitment to training and teamwork. The lessons learned in Jeddah will undoubtedly shape their preparations for upcoming regattas.
The future of RNZYS Youth Sailing is looking strong, with 16 of our youth sailors making the trek over to Jeddah for the event and both skippers Hyde, aged 20 & Malpot 19, still have many years in the youth circuit to climb the leaderboard.
A big part of the Youth & Women’s Match Racing World Championship event in Jeddah has been the collaboration between the Saudi Sailing Federation and Mastercard Youth Training Programme, with RNZYS sailors joining the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia team – Sam Scott, Luca Smith and Phoebe Buckland who joined Helm Saleh Alhawil and Battal Alsultan

Sumaya Bamakhrama & Shahad Nour will join RNZYS Mastercard Youth Training Programme sailors Ella Arnold, Madison Rist & Alissa Marshall in the Women’s World Match Racing Championship set to kick off 5th December, also competing will be RNZYS skipper Megan Thomson.
While Saleh Al Huweil, didn’t score a win at the Youth World Championship event, it was still a win for the future of match racing events in Saudi Arabia. RNZYS Head Coach Zak Merton put this into perspective by saying “Four months ago they had never match raced before and had very limited keeler experience, I was very proud of not only our YTP sailors on board who served as crew and tacticians, but Saleh & Battel who while they didn’t score a win, were always in the action and keeping the teams on their toes.”
