SW  Fresh to Frightening

Saturday was a great day for the Emirates Team New Zealand Youth Training Programme, with an early start at the boats and no run. We headed out and completed a morning of match racing in a nice 15-knot breeze. There were some good starts on show and some tactical racing around the course.

We came back in and, with it being the RNZYS Opening Day, got ready to compete in the Opening Day Race. We had two Elliott 7s, the Young 88 Skitzo, and Sham Pain. It was a good race for all, albeit a little wet and cold. Skitzo was lucky enough to win the Mark Foy, with the two Elliott 7s coming 2nd and 4th. A big thanks to the handicappers, JK for the use of Sham Pain, and Rick for the use of Skitzo.

Tonight will be the first night of the Young 88 Summer Sprints. Rick Hackett of KZ Marine has kindly donated the use of Skitzo to the ETNZ YTP for the series. It is a great opportunity for our athletes to get some experience on a bigger boat and enjoy some great close racing, as the Young 88s are known for. We are looking forward to it and to improving throughout the season.

Sunday, once again, was another windy day with gusts into the 40s. We did not head out and instead spent some time inside watching some of the America’s Cup racing, while also learning about Shackleton and Worsley’s incredible 1914 survival story aboard the Endurance and James Caird.

Fingers crossed this coming weekend will be a little less windy!
