Fresh to Frightening
Sunday 13th September
SSW 15 gusting 25
Last weekend was a pretty windy affair all round. Saturday’s forecast was for high winds, gusting up to 35 knots, so the call was made not to go out and instead look after the assets. The day was spent working through match racing theory and sailmaking techniques that are useful when at sea.
Sunday was a bit calmer, but still toward the upper end of the wind range. We started the day with drills on our own, working on down speed tacking, tacking multiple times and big ducks in the big pressure. It was great to get some work in the big breeze.
We finished the day with a couple of fleet races. With A5s up, the Elliott 7s were lit up and sending it downwind.
It was a bit of a shame not to sail on the Saturday, but overall it was still a productive and valuable weekend for the Emirates Team New Zealand Youth Training Programme.
